Never give up your dreams
Who would have thought that one year after the start of the global COVID-19 pandemic we would still be under its influence?
With the confinement, the usual moments and places of resourcing, such as cultural places, family or friendly outings, bar tables, indoor sports practices… have disappeared, resulting in a void that is increasingly difficult to live with.
As social street workers, we know how children and young people in particular suffer from this void and lack of social contact. We also know the price paid by all street populations in the face of this crisis and the often repressive and liberticidal measures taken by many governments.
In this particular context, let us remember the quotation of the novelist Simone de Beauvoir;
“There are a few virtues sadder than resignation; it transforms into fantasies, contingent daydreams, projects that were first constituted as will and as freedom.”
If there is a profession where resignation has no place, it is in social street work.
It is in this state of mind that I inform you of our decision to maintain our will to organize the third international forum of social street workers “Words from the Street III” in Brussels from October 18 to 22, 2021.
More than ever we need to get together, to enjoy being together, to exchange, and to bring a strong political discourse against the democratic backsliding that is becoming more widespread.
Of course, we do not know yet if the conditions will allow such a gathering, but from April – May 2021, we will learn more about that and we will look into it to know the shape the Forum will take.
One thing is sure, we will not give up…
Looking forward to seeing you all again,
Edwin de Boevé, Head of Dynamo International
